Honestly, I was a little wary of making this purchase. I've been camping for more than 25 years, and have typically carried in heavier gear. The idea of relying on this little kettle (and accessories) for a week in the Boundary Waters had me a bit nervous. Let me just say it this way: after that first trip, I changed my default gear kit and will be taking this with me everywhere!

While this kit would be an ideal solo solution for an ultra-light trekker who relies mostly on dehydrated foods, my wife and I took it along primarily to boil water for oatmeal and coffee. We did carry another cook kit for our heartier meals, but I really fell in love with this little set quite quickly. It is so light and seemingly tiny that I was not sure it would suffice, but it held about a full quart and that was more than enough for multiple bowls of oatmeal, or to fill my 30 oz. press pot for coffee.

The lid seals quite well, and it heated water to a boil quickly on our... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite..., April 10, 2011

The Handle can melt if high heat is used or if the wind blows the flames from the stove up the side of the kettle. The insulation material needs to be able to handle higher heat or removed all together to be considered perfect to me. The kettle does heat water fast and the size and weight are great for ultralight backpacking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for backpacking!, August 31, 2011

I just used this on an overnight backpacking experiment with a good friend. It works great! The handle stays cool, as long as you leave it pointing up and don't let it fall down against the kettle. It pours easily and well and by holding the included spork over the kettle spout you can easily strain your noodles. The mug works well and is actually quite comfortable to hold. You hold it like a sandwich, top and bottom instead of holding it around the sides. I'm trying to gather gear without spending a lot of money, but this cookset was totally worth it. It's a clever design and a thousand times better than the classic mess kit.
