If you think all magnesium firesteels are the same, think again. I previously purchased and reviewed the Chinese version Emergency Fire Starter, which did the job but it wasn't as easy as I expected. Now that I tried the MagSlab, it's without doubt a superior product. The magnesium seems a little softer (a good thing), the ferro rod gives off hotter sparks, and the workmanship is better - no glue sticking out around the ferro rod, the striker is very effective, and the cord is long enough for full range of motion. Using the MagSlab, I was able to light a bundle of paper towel pieces using just the ferro rod, whereas the Chinese model failed to light the same bundle. I bought this fire starter simply based on the number of fires it can start. I started around 3 fires with it just to get use to the functionality of the product. I watched a couple of youtube videos on it and it seemed simple enough. Scrape some magnesium shavings into a small pile and then use the firesteel to create a nice spark and you have a fire. Magnesium is the best to use as a fuel to start your fires because it supplies its own oxygen (this is why flares are water proof). Just remember when you use your firesteel to press down firmly with your scraper to get some sparks.
