Reviews for the "scout" model fire piston on YouTube can go both ways. one young man gave it a great review and a fine tutorial while another showing an inferior model gave it a poor review. the Scout Fire Piston as distributed by this company is perhaps one of the finer pieces of outdoors equipment i've ever used. as it came to me the dark colored parts seem to be made of a high density, maybe fiber reinforced plastic. the rod it metal, perhaps aluminum though i'm not sure. it was shipped to me with two o-rings(one installed) prepacked with Vaseline, charcloth and a instruction/troubleshooting/what tinders to use 8 1/2 by 11 sheet. also the durability of the ziplock bags all these came in means you can pull it out of the box, test it, put it back in the bag, toss it right in your pack and go on your expedition of choice. while i will probably never go on an extended excursion without matches i will definately include this fire piston as a back up emergency fire starter. it's benefits... I bought this Wilderness Solutions Fire Piston and have been blown away by how well it works. I knew it was going to be in my mailbox any day now so I had a tinder bundle ready to go. I wanted to see how long it would take to actually make fire right out of the box. I literally had a red hot coal with the enclosed char cloth within two quick compressions and had a fire inside a minute. Now with some practice I get a hot coal on every one or two compressions. This thing is amazing and the craftsmanship from Wilderness Solutions is second to none. Do yourself a big favor and buy one of these pistons from these guys and you won't be sorry. I've lived 31 years in Alaska and will never go out in the bush without one of these again. This fire piston is incredible. Let me say first off to the negative reviewers, initially I too had some serious misgivings about the fire piston. I think I beat both my hands to death at least twice with no results. I thought I had just learned a $35.00 lesson the hard way and was ready to cut my losses. Why then did I give it 4 stars? 4 stars to the fire piston, 1 star to me. So what changed my mind. I knew it had to work somehow, they've been around for so long and had great reviews. I had contacted the seller and he was more than willing to work with me on it over the phone. But before I called I came up with the idea to look for tutorials on the fire piston on You Tube and found some good ones. After that, I was ready to start all over and try it again. I cleaned out my fire piston to make sure nothing was in the chamber. I lightly lubed the o-ring with Vaseline and ran the rod in and out of the chamber to lightly lube the chamber (not too much).
