5.0 out of 5 stars Light, durable, inexpensive, September 13, 2010

This review is from: MSR Alpine Bowl (Misc.)
I've seen stainless steel bowls of similar shape and size for around $20. This bowl is negligibly heavier than a similar sized plastic bowl but is much more durable.

The main advantages versus plastic is the ability to use it as a pot to heat food directly. It's also more durable if that's important to you.

The disadvantages are that you'll need to insulate your lap or use something to hold the bowl if you're eating very hot foods. Unlike the plastic which doesn't conduct heat as readily, I noticed that eating a just-heated chili required using a cloth napkin to hold the bowl. That's a minor point though. Others have said that metal can leave an aftertaste versus plastic but I did not notice this.

You can use it to heat water. However, if you plan on using a pair of needlenose pliers to hold the bowl (like those found on the Leatherman Wave or Victorinox Spirit) keep in mind that there's a lip around the edge that makes this tricky.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best!, July 13, 2006
This review is from: MSR Alpine Bowl (Sports)
This is the best bowl for camping and hiking. I don't like eating out of aluminum, but this is just as light, and titanium is too expensive. This is just the right size, and it nests inside the Alpine cookset. It also doubles as a small pot -- if you're heating something for yourself -- and works with the MSR handle. I highly recommend.

The MSR Alpine Bowl is made from durable 18-10 stainless steel so it is scratch and dent resistant. Due to its stainless steel design it will not leach harmful chemicals or change flavors. It has a capacity of 27 oz, is 5 inches wide and weighs. 3.6 oz/102 grams. It is much less expensive than a Titanium bowl with the tradeoff being additional weight.

If you are looking for a bowl to eat oatmeal, cream of wheat, cereal, soup, beans, pasta, small salad, etc. then the MSR Alpine Bowl will work great and it is easy to clean. You can place it over a fire to heat up the contents but use caution as the bowl will be hot and can cause a burn. I use this bowl with the MSR Pocket Rocket Stove and it works great. Your MSR pots will be even more efficient if you allow them to blacken with use because a blackened surface absorbs heat... Read more
