I have plenty of past experience with mylar bags, in the past I have always used the 5 or 7 mil bags because they are much stronger. These bags are 3.5 mil (I have never used 3.5 mil bags before), and are so thin that you can see right through them (when holding up to light). I can actually read the words on my computer screen when looking through one side of this bag. This is not possible with the 5 mil bags. If the food you're storing is sensitive to light (like dry milk) these bags will not protect it. Most all foods are affected by light (known as photodegradation) and as a result can affect flavor, color & vitamin loss. So for maximum shelf life, darker is better. They also had a very strong chemical smell inside them (smells exactly like super glue), and I've never noticed this smell with other bags. I actually became nauseous after smelling the bag a few times, trying to remember what that very familiar smell was. I don't know... Just fill with your product, leaving space for a seal. Throw in an oxygen absorber, lay across a rod and iron all but about 2", put your crevice attachment on the vacuum and stick it in the hole you left. Vacuum out the air, pull out the hose and seal quickly. Works best if you do not overfill the bags. This will keep for a very long time. |
