5.0 out of 5 stars The best of three integrated systems, September 4, 2010
This review is from: Primus EtaExpress Stove with 1-Liter Pot (Gray) (Sports)
Let me start by saying that integrated stove systems are the future of outdoor cooking. They save tremendous amounts of fuel and cook your food/boil your water faster than conventional stoves of the past- these are both very good things and things you want in your next stove, whether it be LPG or naptha-based. Personally I was looking for an LPG model afters years of carrying an Optimus Nova- the weight and bulk of the stove and cookware was simply too much for weekend trips, and I didn't need winter performance. There are three models on the market: MSR Reactor, Jetboil PCS, and the Primus EtaExpress. I researched each model extensively by reading every review and comparison I could find on the internet and outdoor magazines. They are all very similar as far as efficiency, wind resistance, and heat output, give or take. I chose the Primus in the end simply because of versatility. With the MSR and Jetboil systems, the heater element is proprietary and built into the stove itself. You... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just Bang for Buck..., October 20, 2010
This review is from: Primus EtaExpress Stove with 1-Liter Pot (Gray) (Sports)
This stove is not only the best bang for your buck, it is the best in its class.

I want to clear up some confusion with prior posts. There appears to be 2 different versions of the etaExpress. They are basically the same stove but on one version the windscreen hooks onto the stoves pot holders. This is a taller stove and you have to use a narrow pot when using the windscreen.
The second version (IMHO the better version), the windscreen connects to the lip of the fuel cannister. This creates a lower profile and allows for the use of ANY pot.

I used 1 cannister of fuel for several demonstrations, several solo overnight hikes, and a 4 day trip (2 people) in Mammoth. Most of our meals were the dehydrated type but we also fried fish on a couple of occassions. This thing does not use a lot of fuel.

The manufacturers website said that this stove is not recommended for very cold temperatures at high elevations. However, on one of my trips I was at... Read more

This review is from: Primus EtaExpress Stove with 1-Liter Pot (Gray) (Sports)
Took two EtaExpress cooking systems for my wife and me backpacking for a weekend (2 days, 5 meals). Looking at the picture, I put the windscreen in the wrong place (with the base of the windscreen wedged between the burner and the fuel canister's top metal ring), so I had major problems with our wind, though it was blowing up to 30 mph at times. When I sheltered using my tent's outer skin, it roared like crazy and boiled 4 cups (1 liter), in about the 3 minutes reviewers quote. I will definitely try it again with the windscreen attached properly!

Due to the wind, we wasted a lot of fuel. I had taken two 110g fuel canisters, and we ran out of both canisters on Sunday morning at breakfast. It should be noted that we aren't your typical water-boiling-instant-ramen backpackers. We made 2 cooked items per meal and actually cooked and simmered lots of items (boil-in-bag rice, hard boiled eggs, etc.), made a pot or 2 of coffee after each meal, plus boiled a few pots of water for...
